More Than Just a Lawn Tractor

I've always had a soft spot for Oliver equipment, so owning an Oliver 125 lawn tractor was something I had wanted for a long time. One day I came across an ad on Craigslist for a 1973 Oliver 125. We know it's a 1973 because the serial numbers on both the transmission and engine matched that year.

The seller was asking $2,500. After looking it over, I offered $2,000, and to my surprise, the offer was accepted. The next challenge was getting it home. We removed the steering wheel, and with a little creativity, managed to fit the tractor into our minivan for the trip home.

Once it was in the shop, the real work began. We completely disassembled the tractor. Most of the parts were sandblasted, and then the search started for the pieces we needed, including a good grille, headlights, paint, and countless new nuts, bolts, and screws. It took about three months of evenings and weekends, but little by little it all came together.

Seeing the finished tractor for the first time made all the work worthwhile. The fresh paint, polished parts, and working headlights made it look like it had just rolled out of the dealership.

Today, the Oliver 125 is one of my favorite tractors. I added a Rollag license plate to the back as a personal touch, and I enjoy taking it to tractor shows and plow days. It's just as much fun to drive around the yard as it is to display at an event. No matter where it goes, it always brings smiles and starts conversations.

Some people see an old lawn tractor. I see a piece of Oliver history that was worth saving. Every time I climb into the seat and turn the key, I'm reminded that some of the most enjoyable restorations don't have to be the biggest tractors. Sometimes the little ones leave the biggest impression.
